On Friday December 9th, 2011 some members of Ross Net Impact took a private tour of the Executive Residence. Many members of the Ross community are used to meeting and studying in the lobby of the Executive Residence, but very few have gotten a sneak peak around the rest of the building; this is because the hotel portion of the Executive Residence is only open to Executive MBA students and alumni. Saprina Dresser, Conference Planning Manager at the Executive Residence, gave the group of 8 MBA students a tour of the hotel, followed by a delicious lunch in the Executive Residence Dining Room.

In keeping with the Ross School’s commitment to sustainability, the Executive Residence incorporates many sustainable and recycled building materials, including the granite, marble, oak paneling, and wool carpeting in each of its 105 guest rooms. The rooms also feature an environmentally-friendly line of bath products packaged in 100% biodegradable bottles made of post-consumer recycled material. The group was also surprised to learn that the keycards for the guestrooms are biodegradable and printed with soy ink. Not only is the Executive Residence sustainable, but it is also stylish (think along the lines of the W hotels). They source many of their decorative elements locally, primarily from Motawi Tileworks and Pewabic Pottery, both long a part of the history of the Arts and Crafts movement in Ann Arbor and Detroit.

After touring the hotel, the group went down to The Executive Residence Dining Room for a fabulous lunch. The Executive Residence dining room features locally-grown produce and sustainable proteins on their menu. The biggest crowd pleaser was the “make your own burger bar”, which got rave reviews from the students. Overall the tour was an eye-opening experience for many students, who previously did not know about the sustainability initiatives and who always wondered what the mysterious executive residence rooms looked like. If you are interested in taking a tour of the Executive Residence, stay tuned…..Ross Net Impact will be organizing another tour in the coming weeks.
