The role: Global Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Google.org

As our communications manager based in Mountain View, you will lead communications and public affairs outreach for Google.org and Google’s Charitable Giving. You will work across the communications and Google.org teams to develop and lead our public affairs strategy. Your outreach will include efforts to inform thought leaders and partners about Google’s philanthropic work, as well as proactive campaigns to advance our public policy goals among journalists, commentators, academics, other companies and third parties. We're looking for great communicators who can understand complex issues and explain them in person and also via well-written, simple blog posts, FAQs, video scripts and more.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead communications for Google.org and Google’s broader philanthropic initiatives. Explain the goals, outcomes and opportunities for partnership for all of Google’s philanthropic efforts to external and internal audiences.
  • Direct messaging, media relations, rapid response and reputation management for all philanthropic efforts at Google, including Google.org, charitable grants, in-kind donations, and approximately $180M in charitable and academic support across the company.
  • Work with Marketing to develop websites, presentations and reports. Create and maintain a new website and an annual report on Google’s giving programs and outcomes.
  • Manage Google’s relationships and partnerships with academics, non-profit organizations, advocates, and colleagues in other companies.
  • Lead strategic communications for Google.org, including advocacy campaigns with partners to promote innovative solutions in areas such as education and development. Organize outreach for Google.org initiatives such as Crisis Response in the U.S. and globally.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree. In lieu of degree, 7 years of relevant experience
  • 5 years professional experience in a fast-paced business, media, or non-profit environment (or graduate degree plus 3 years work experience)
  • Experience managing crisis communications and serving as an on-the-record spokesperson on complex issues, particularly on public policy or legal matters
  • Demonstrated track record of creating public affairs campaigns and partnerships to achieve specific policy goals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in public policy or other relevant field
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written
  • Ability to think, plan, and execute on multiple projects simultaneously in an organized fashion
  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in fast-paced, high-stress environments, as well as an ability to escalate appropriately
  • Ability to work with colleagues in different countries and understand cultural differences.
